I’ve been an avid yogi for five years now. If you’re anything like me, you’ll be wanting to stick to your yoga schedule while you’re out of town. I make sure to check Yelp for reviews of local yoga studios before heading out of town. This can be a bit of a hit and miss exercise though. But if you’re heading my way on a San Diego vacation, and want to fit in a few yoga sessions, consider this list of my favorite San Diego yoga studios.
This charming little studio can be found in one of San Diego’s landmark buildings. El Cortez is a located on the corner of Ash and 8th Ave. It’s easy to find The Little Yoga Studio. Every San Diegan knows where El Cortez is and can point you in the right direction. Classes offered there vary from yoga/pilates to Vinyasa flow to Ashtanga. From what I’ve seen, I would guess that most students are familiar with basic poses and have practiced yoga before, but new students are encouraged to participate. This is my favorite studio in San Diego. The yoga teachers are not only teachers but friends, and they really care about their students. It’s typical to attend a class with incense, tealight candles, gongs and chanting — a truly beautiful experience.
This studio is located in the heart of Ocean Beach on Voltaire, just West of Sunset Cliffs Blvd. The vibe on entering may be all hippy and mystical, but this studio welcomes yoga practitioners of all levels of experience. It is bigger than the Little Yoga Studio and has high vaulted ceilings, but it still has a wonderful warmth to it. You won’t find any mirrors in this studio. As they say: “it’s not about how you look; it’s about how you feel”.
Located in the one of the most desirable areas of San Diego, La Jolla Yoga Center is one of the city’s premier yoga destinations. Offering a plethora of workshops and retreats, this studio is known for its passionate and enthusiastic teachers and students. This studio is a beautiful and relaxing space and can be found on Fay Ave. between Kline and Silverado in La Jolla.
Infinite is perfect for those looking to deepen their knowledge, or those who just want to learn the basics of this ancient discipline. Not only do they offer pure Ashtanga Vinyasa classes but they mix it up with a schedule that includes core and sculpt classes. This special studio is a conveniently located on Kettner Blvd. (between Laurel and Hawthorn) and the metered parking is ample.
Nestled in South Park, a charming San Diego neighborhood, Ginseng offers a beautiful and peaceful environment to practice yoga. Offering a wide range of styles, Ginseng looks to deepen the physical practice by inspiring peace trough tranquility. This airy studio offers abundant natural light and is the perfect setting for starting your day or unwinding after an especially long one. In addition, acupuncture and massage therapies are also available.
Finally, to all my fellow yogis, remember the words of the wise:
“With constant practice, one can improve his physical body and mental attitude rapidly, thereby igniting the higher motives of making ones self-useful to himself and all mankind.” ~ Dharma Mittra
